Should I install cellular shades close to the window glass or at the edge of the window frame?
My window frames are about 4" deep, and the baseboard heat is located beneath each window. For the best energy efficiency, is it better to install cellular shades as close to the window glass as possible, or farther out at the inside edge of the window frame? Or does it not really matter (in which case I'd install at edge of frame for aesthetic reasons)? I read on the Dept. of Energy website to install shades close to the glass, but an interior storm window website said that more distance from the glass is better for insulation (but perhaps interior storm windows and shades are not comparable).
You are right about being close to the cglass, but the confusion that you see is related to the difference between the blinds and storm windows. Blidns and shades insulate, but usually do not add additional radiation of heat and cold. On the other hand, storm windows that are too close to the glass will become cold, and will then radiate the cold.
