Reading 50 75
Not long sentences and multiple complex of difficult words make it great literature?
The problem with reading non-fiction crime and Romance is that the syntax of sentences is too comlpicated; sentences are too long spanning 4-5-6 lines and there are several words per page if you have looked at each Once in the dictionary, you will spend equal time looking and reading. I'm smart enough. I have a post-graduate training and my vocalulary is better than Most people I know-I suppose at least 25,000, 30,000 words - but I'm still having this problem! If I have trouble reading the works of Roth, Updike and Bellow my guess is that 95% of readers do. So my question is: is it a prerequisite of the "great" literature to be difficult to read? Do the authors do this intentionally or is it their natural flow of language - when they speak in everyday conversation, they speak 50-75 words in long sentences? Do they automatically deleting 97% of the population of their potential readers and do not care to communicate with Average Joes?
No, I do not be hard to read is a prerequisite of the "great" literature, but I think some of the great literature can be difficult for us to read today. We think differently, act differently, speak and communicate differently even people 20-30 years ago. Consider the impact of the Internet mail, e-mail and text have on our communication styles. As our busy lifestyles crammed full as we expect everything to be the impacts of our quick and easy communication and writing. I think of great characters with whom readers can identify parcels greater than the reality of balance and the suspension of disbelief and a writing style that flows and is pleasant (not necessarily easy) to read great literature. I have a suggestion for you if, as I recently read "the classics" myself. I had a very difficult time at first too. I started reading every book twice. I want to read the first time, skimming the parts, words, etc. .. I did not enter immediately. Instead, I try to get the general feeling of the book and understand the plot. Next time I would take more care and really read the book, sometimes reread a paragraph or a sentence or a few times to look back in the early passages to make sense of the passage today. I would also read many books by the same author. We know that every author has his own writing style and after about 1 1 / 2 books I found in reading the "rhythm" of their style and it was much easier to read their books while. One more thing, find books with endnotes through and use them tremendously!
