URGENT Tortoise Help?
Howdy,
i asked this a few days ago but it got deleted >:(
I have been owned by Tortoises all my life and this was a first.
i had 2 Male tortoises living together (T.H.Hermanni), this is pretty normal as i'm owned by 16 tortoises and have quite a few other males paired together.
one of them i bred myself and the other i bought from my local breeder.
I've had them both for 5 years but one day they started fighting and i thought nothing of it as somedays around mating season they do fight!
But one day (10/05/2008) i found one of my beloved tortoises dead, he had bite wounds just under his eye and a few on the back of the neck and a few chunck of flesh had been ripped out.
i have NEVER know of tortoises to kill each other if there isnt a female.
so could someone please help me.
i have had them 19 years and bred them for 8 and this is a first.

no males will fight Herman's are very territorial, and should not really be kept together, they have probably got more aggressive with each other as now they have reached sexual maturity, over crowding can also make males fight for territory and in the breeding season they do fight for females, a tortoise pen that is used for breeding should only house one male and a couple of females, but as you have found out the males will kill each other to be the dominant one, you will have to separate any males housed together especially the Herman's it is sad this has happened but if you remember not to keep more than one male together you can avoid any more sad deaths.
