City Rose
Can I grow the Gene Boerner rose in Zone 5b?
I live in Kansas City, MO - I think that is Zone 5b. Can I grow the Gene Boerner rose in this area? Would it have to be covered in the winter?
Ok this one is a bit of a long answer. The Gene Boerner Rose is hardy in zones 6- 9. Now since you are in a large city you may live in a micro climate: http://naturehills.com/gardening/blogs/common_questions_answered/archive/2008/08/29/what-does-the-term-micro-climate-mean.aspx that may allow you to grow and enjoy this rose. Of course whoever you purchase the rose from probably won't guarantee is as they will consider the rose to be planted out of zone. If you are fortunate enough to find a Kansas City nursery that carries the rose that would probably indicate that the rose will grow in your area. People always experiment with planting out of zone and they can be successful with it. Just because a plant is zone rated you can sometimes be successful out of zone if you are not skipping more than one zone.
I hope this helps you some.
